Week 4: Acid base balance and oxygenation.

The body is an amazing machine. Like all high functioning machines there must be balance and a level of homeostasis. The concept of Acid-Base Balance is rarely seen and an isolated function. Fluid and Electrolytes, Perfusion, and Oxygenation are always at the table.

Interpreting ABGs as a nurse is often with the help and collaboration of amazing RTs, and advanced care providers. But yet essential for the RN at the bedside to understand homeostasis and Acid Base balance and imbalance. Side by side with Oxygenation. To be termed a normal PaO2 level, the arterial blood sample should show an PaO2 level of 75-100 mm Hg. If below that it is termed Hypoxemia.
